Sorry, the human race is out of ideas. Please call again later...

it makes me worry...
i'm a self confessed musical geek. many people are aware of this. i'm proud of it. but lately the musical world has concerned...
Recently Hollywood has enjoyed the revamp of the movie musical. now i'm the first to admit that movies like Rent, The Phantom of the Opera, the Producers and Chicago are among my favourites, and i think it's a good thing to make movies out of musicals because then everyone has the chance to see them. but Broadway is now enjoying something that is quite the reverse. the musical based on a movie. Now the Disney ones were fine, because they were really already musicals to start off with - Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, The Lion King and now Tarzan are all successful, and they are enjoyable shows, buti think it is going too far now! Out of the 4 nominees for this years Best Musical Tony Award, 2 were based on movies - The Colour Purple, and The Wedding Singer. The Wedding Singer!! Come on!!! and the colour purple was originally based on a book! it's gone from book to movie to musical. where else can it go?? poetry? mime? interpretive dance?? when you think about it, Phantom has gone one better - it went from book to movie to musical and back to movie! and look at the producers! the 2005 movie was based on the 2003 musical based on the 1968 movie!
later this year "high fidelity" will open on broadway, based on the popular book by nick hornby and the john cusack movie.
Hairspray, the tony award winner in 2000 was based on a 1950s movie.
Wicked, hugely successful, about to open in London, still running on Broadway, based on the novel by Gregory Maguire which was inspired by the classic movie "The Wizard of Oz".
West Side Story, an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet
Camleot, based on the legend of King Arthur
Spamalot! A musical based on Monty Python's The Holy Grail!
2 out of the 3 major musicals opening in Sydney this year were previously movies - Titanic and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
For crying out loud even the Lord Of The Rings is a musical now!!
Stephen Scwartz wrote Children of Eden and Godspell - the first based on the first 9 chapters of Genesis, and the 2nd based on the gospel of Matthew. The Bible!
Even steering away from musicals (it's tough, but i'll manage) and moving just to movies - so many are based on books or are remakes of older movies or even comics!
LOTR, x men, spiderman, superman, memoirs of a geisha, the harry potter series, eragon, da vinci code, capote, oliver twist, pride and prejudice, troy
OH MY GOODNESS then we can move on to things based on the life of someone famous!
Capote! Walk The Line! Colour Me Kubrick! The Life and Death of Peter Sellers! Ray! A Beautiful Mind! Cinderella Man! Lennon! the Tony Award winner this year - Jersy Boys, based on the life of Frankie Valli!
FRANKIE VALLI!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!

ok but the really scary thing after my ranting is done. i can't think of anything better. thanks to years of overloading my brain with books and movies and tv shows my imagination is now kaput. i can't think of anything totally original anymore. every idea stems from something i've seen or heard or read somewhere once before. I'm going to throw in a quote from the movie Angels in America (based on the play by Tony Kushner) "The imagination can't create anything new can it?"

apparently not.

now i am aware that i'm making it seem like there is nothing at all original left in the world, but honestly, think back to the last 10 movies you've seen and think about how many are actually truly original.

i'll stop ranting now. hmm that was quite a long one.if you've made it all the way down here, i congratulate you.
goodnight.
